Holding facilities for wild horses, like the one in Reno NV, contain hundreds of mustangs that have been taken from the open range. Many mares will give birth at the facility. It is natural for foals to lay down and sleep, even in the wild.

It is disturbing, however, that recent information has surfaced about the fact that over 577 horses between 2010 and 2012, have been taken to a local rendering plant. (A rendering company will pick up and dispose of dead horses.) The BLM reported only 241 horses from their facility. The majority of those horses were foals.

The Horseless Carriage Race

Some of you may have gone to the National Auto Museum during your stay in Reno, NV. The Exhibit on the 1908 New York to Paris Auto Race has some very interesting journals and pictures. Of course, automobiles were supposed to replace the need for horses; however, throughout the race, horses were used to assist the mechanical beasts along their journey. Teams of horses pulled the vehicle across waterways, out of snow and mud, and even ran along side just for fun.

The Thomas Flyer traveled through Asia and Russia where the photo shows a herd of wild horses accompanying the horseless carriage! The horses, both domestic and wild, were an important aspect and essential feature of the success for the completion of the race.

Frisky Stallions

Spring is in the air, and young stallions are feeling their oats (or dried grass!)

Small bachelor bands of young mustangs can be seen playing and fighting. Similar to young male humans, juvenile wild horses are looking to find the perfect mare to start their family. At the same time, precious new foals in the band bring big smiles to all who get a chance to see them. Life’s Little Pleasures

New-born foals gracing the landscape give us such pleasure to see. New year, new spring and new life gives us a renewed sense of wonder and discovery. What a treat to be surprised by this little foal with his mare and stallion father nearby as we drove along the canyon. The foaling season, from March to July, gives us new hope in nature. Sometimes nature can bring unexpected changes too. Sonny, now 18 months old, who is becoming a strong young stallion, was born October 8.

Wild horses prepare for the next storm coming in from the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Two rain storms brought Truckee River levels to near flooding. The third is expected to bring even more precipitation to the Northern Nevada region in Reno.
The mustangs are prepared with their thick winter wooly coats as they brace themselves against the strong winds. The amazing elements of nature humble us. Wild horse have an amazing resilience that has enabled them to survive through drought, floods and scorching heat for hundreds, even thousands of years.

Autum Leaves

The aspens and cotton woods trees turn to brilliant yellows and reds, and wild horses show the first signs of adapting to the changing weather with their winter coats forming.

The state of Nevada, Department of Agriculture continues to set up bait traps at various locations to lure the wild horses with food and water. Dedicated advocates keep watch throughout the Virginia Range for the traps. The non-profit groups were successful in the last two auctions to save the mustangs from being purchased by the kill-buyers. Many people donated time and money to buy the horses at the auction. Of course, no one wants to see a repeat of last month’s unfortunate events.
